How many genetic defects are known?

There are currently over 7,000 known genetic diseases, according to the National Center for Biotechnology Information (NCBI) GeneReviews database. And an estimated 85% of these rare diseases do not have an approved cure. Each of these diseases is caused by a specific genetic defect, although, some have more than one genetic defect associated with them.
