Recognize muscle weakness, limited range of movement, curvature of the spine and enlarged calf muscles. These are all signs of muscular dystrophy. They will usually get worse as the disease progresses.

Be aware of walking difficulties, especially falls and poor balance. They can be associated with other problems and illnesses, but they may be symptoms of muscular dystrophy.

Look for drooping eyelids. Certain forms of the disease such, as oculopharyngeal muscular dystrophy will affect the muscles that control the eyelids. It may be difficult for someone to keep their eyes open. Muscles of the face may also be affected.

Take note of progression of symptoms. Some forms of muscular dystrophy have rapid muscle wasting and deterioration. Other forms have a slow progression. Determining the rate of progression will also help your physician diagnosis the particular form of muscular dystrophy you may have.

Learn about your family history. Muscular dystrophy is a genetic disorder. It can occur in people with no family history, but it is often inherited. Ask your parents and grandparents if any relatives have ever been diagnosed with any form of muscular dystrophy.
