Cherries for Gout Treatment

Gout is a very painful form of arthritis that usually attacks the big toe. It is not curable, but it is treatable both by traditional medicine and dietary changes.
  1. Causes

    • Gout occurs when uric acid in your blood builds up. Your body makes uric acid when it breaks down purines, which occur naturally in your body. Some foods, including organ meats, asparagus, and mushrooms, also contain purines.

    History

    • Historically, gout has been linked with rich foods and excessive alcohol use. Some referred to gout as the "disease of kings" because of this association.

    Effects

    • One of the best foods to eat if you have gout is cherries, a high fiber and low calorie fruit. Cherries contain melatonin, which acts like a sedative and as an analgesic. These qualities can help reduce pain.

    Expert Insight

    • According to the Mayo Clinic, cherries have been associated with lower levels of uric acid, which is the cause of gout.

    Cherries

    • Canned, fresh, sweet, or sour cherries work equally well. As with any food, don't overindulge. Approximately a 1/2 lb. per day is a good goal. Cherry supplements are available if you don't like cherries.
