Can you get gout from someone who has it?
Gout is a type of arthritis that is caused by a build-up of uric acid in the joints. Uric acid is a natural waste product that is produced when the body breaks down purines, which are found in certain foods and drinks, such as red meat, organ meats, seafood, alcohol, and sugary drinks.
Gout is not contagious, so you cannot get it from someone who has it. However, if you have a family history of gout, you are more likely to develop the condition.
Risk factors for gout include:
- Being overweight or obese
- Eating a diet high in purines
- Drinking excessive alcohol
- Having certain medical conditions, such as kidney disease or diabetes
If you have any of these risk factors, it is important to see a doctor to get tested for gout and to discuss ways to manage your risk.
