Gout Herbal Cures

Gout is a form of arthritis marked by redness, swelling, pain and inflammation in the joints. The painful condition is caused by a build-up of uric acid in the joints and can usually be relieved by a reduction of uric acid in the body. Conventional medicine for gout relief includes the use of NSAID pain relievers or corticosteroid injections. There are, however, many herbal treatments that may help relieve pain and perhaps reduce the severity of gout flare-ups.
  1. Autumn Crocus

    • Autumn crocus is a plant that blossoms with purple or white flowers and can be used in the treatment of gout due to its content of the chemical colchicine. Colchicine is a substance that can help to reduce acidity in the body because of its alkaline nature. Colchicine is found in the flowers, seeds and corm (the underground stem), and is actually used in many traditional gout medications and treatments. Beware of using autumn crocus to relieve gout on your own as this plant can be toxic. Use this herbal remedy only under the close supervision of a doctor or herbal practitioner.

    Devil's Claw

    • Devil's claw is an old folk remedy for arthritis. It is believed to help with gout because of its ability to reduce uric acid levels in the body while also lowering cholesterol and relieving pain in the joints. Devil's claw can be taken in the form of a supplement, tincture or extract. Be advised, however, that the Food and Drug Administration does not regulate this herb and it should never be taken unless a physician is first consulted.

    Bilberry

    • Bilberry, a relative of the blueberry, is another herbal remedy for gout. It contains flavonoids and anthocyanosides, which can help the body eliminate uric acid more effectively. Bilberry is available in supplement form in many health food stores. Always be certain to purchase herbal supplements from only the most reputable of suppliers and do not attempt to treat yourself without a doctor's opinion.

    Nettle Root

    • Nettle root is actually the root of a plant called Urtica urens. It is available in fresh or dried form as well as in a supplement. When used properly, nettle root may help the kidneys eliminate uric acid from the body more efficiently.
