Herbs for Gout

Gout, the extremely painful common type of arthritis that occurs when excess uric acid is in the bloodstream, can be easily and effectively treated with herbs. While some herbs can be taken internally to counteract the effects of gout on the body, there are also several herbs that can be used externally on the painful area to grant immediate relief.
  1. Devil's Claw

    • Devil's claw, an indigenous African herb, is a natural cleansing agent that reduces uric-acid levels in the body, resulting in reduced inflammation and pain. Take 400 mg of a dried extract three times a day, four to five milliliters of devil's claw tincture three times per day or one to two grams of dried, powdered devil's claw root three times per day.

    Ginger

    • Placing ginger in your bath water will cause you to sweat and help you to expel the uric acid from your tissues. Place 1/3 cup of ground ginger into your bath water. Soak for thirty minutes then drain the bath water and rinse off thoroughly with fresh water, as the ginger may cause irritation if it dries on your skin.

    Celery Seeds

    • Celery seeds relieve gout symptoms by aiding in uric acid elimination from the body. Take 500 mg of celery seed extract twice daily or simmer one tablespoon of celery seeds in 2 cups of water until they become soft, then drain. Drink 1/2 cup of the tea four times daily.

    Cayenne Pepper

    • Cayenne pepper can be used to make an external gout-pain reliever. Boil one cup of water with one cup of vinegar and then add one tablespoon of cayenne pepper to the mixture. Cool the mixture and apply directly onto the painful area. You can also make a paste of wintergreen oil and cayenne pepper and dab it on the affected areas.

    Activated Charcoal

    • Activated charcoal can be used to draw out the toxic uric acid from your body. You can make a compress using 3 tablespoons of ground flaxseed, 1/2 cup of activated charcoal and warm water. You can also take 1/2 to 1 teaspoon of activated charcoal internally daily.

    Garlic

    • Mince and eat several raw garlic cloves daily. You can also add the minced garlic to black-cherry juice to make a powerful gout remedy.

    Mullein

    • Place several mullein leaves into a heated mixture of one part water and one part vinegar. Take out the soaked leaves and apply them to the affected area for 20 to 30 minutes several times daily.
