Foods to Avoid When You Have Gout

Gout is a type of arthritis, caused by a buildup of uric acid that forms crystals in the joints. The crystals cause extreme pain and swelling, along with stiffness. Diet is the best way to control gout.
  1. Significance

    • Purine is a natural substance found in some foods that converts to uric acid during digestion. It is important to keep purine levels low.

    Types

    • Scallops, game meats, gravy, organ meats, sardines and anchovies have the highest level of purines and should be eaten rarely, if ever.

    Considerations

    • Alcohol, particularly beer and wine, is often a trigger for attacks of gout.

    Types

    • You should eat asparagus, cauliflower, oatmeal, mushrooms, spinach, peas, lentils, beef and wheat germ in moderation, because of their moderate to high levels of purines.

    Prevention/Solution

    • Drink plenty of water to help flush uric acid and eat lower-protein sources, like tofu, eggs and the occasional serving of poultry or white fish.
