Cauliflower For Gout

Gout is a painful form of arthritis that can be triggered by a buildup of uric acid, which is the waste product of broken-down purines. Purines are naturally found in some foods and have been associated with gout.
  1. Uric Acid and Purines

    • Purines are naturally found in the body and are prevalent in some foods. Purines break down into uric acid, which is typically absorbed into the bloodstream. However, when too much uric acid is present and the body can't efficiently eliminate it, a buildup may occur. Certain vegetables, such as cauliflower, contain purines.

    Foods High in Purines

    • Like cauliflower, other high-purine foods have been linked to a buildup of uric acid in patients suffering gout. This condition is called hyperuricemia, which is not dangerous. In the most severe cases, painful arthritic symptoms may be present, and a reduction in purine intake is recommended.

    Theories/Speculation

    • While cauliflower does contain a high level of purines, one study cited by the National Center for Biotechnology Information indicates that a high intake of cauliflower and other vegetables rich in purine does not increase the risk of developing gout.

    Consideration for Gout Sufferers

    • While eating purine-rich foods like cauliflower may not increase the risk of developing gout, patients already suffering from gout may find pain relief by limiting their intake of purine-rich foods. In addition to cauliflower, these foods include herring, mackerel, organ meats and anchovies.

    Flush out Uric Acid

    • Gout sufferers may also find relief by increasing fluid consumption. Drinking plenty of liquids helps the body flush out uric acid. (Soft drinks may, however, increase the risk of developing gout.)
