Perimenopause Treatments
-
Oral Contraceptives
-
One of most effective ways to treat the symptoms of perimenopause is oral contraceptives. Doctors prescribe these medications even for women who don't need to use the pill for birth control. The Mayo Clinic writes, "Low-dose pills can regulate periods and reduce hot flashes and vaginal dryness."
Progestin Therapy
-
Progestin is an alternative for woman who can't take oral contraceptives for health reasons or who don't want to take these drugs. Many oral contraceptives contain only progestin. Progestin is a hormone that keeps a woman's eggs from developing completely. Progestin is effective for women with heavy bleeding during their periods or women who suffer from irregular periods.
Endometrial Ablation
-
Endometrial ablation is a medical procedure in which the lining of the uterus (called the endometrium) is removed with a laser or electric current. This method of treatment is very effective for women who suffer from heavy periods. In some cases, endometrial ablation can also end the menstrual cycle.
Diet Changes
-
Changing the diet can be helpful in relieving some perimenopausal symptoms. The Mayo Clinic recommends having a diet low in fat and high in fiber. Adding more fruits, vegetables and whole grains is also important. Because lower levels of estrogen in the body can lead to bone loss or osteoporosis, eating calcium-rich food like milk or cheese is also beneficial. If you can't get enough calcium from food, consider calcium supplements.
Exercise
-
Exercise offers many benefits for the relief of perimenopausal symptoms. The physical activity helps regulate sleep patterns and strengthen bones. To get the most out of exercising, try to do 30 minutes a day several times a day.
Less Stress
-
Stress is believed to cause many disorders and illnesses. But with relaxation methods like meditation, deep breathing, yoga or tai chi, a woman can reduce her level of stress. In some situations, stress may trigger some perimenopausal symptoms.
