Home Remedies for Bacterial Vaginosis

Bacterial vaginosis is a type of vaginitis. The vaginosis occurs when bacteria within the vagina over-accumulates. This will lead to a change in your normal balance of bacteria within the vagina. You may experience painful itching and/or a foul-smelling discharge. If you cannot alleviate symptoms with natural remedies, have a fever, or an odor is persistent, it is important to seek medical attention and be treated with antibiotics.
  1. Eat Yogurt

    • Eating yogurt (that has acidophilus) is one of the best ways to balance the bacteria that occurs naturally within your vagina. If you're not a fan of yogurt, you can buy acidophilus capsules.

    Skip the Douche

    • Under no circumstance should you try to douche. The chemicals contained in these products will further wreak havoc on your body's natural pH balance.

    Use Tea Tree Oil

    • You can buy tea tree oil in the cosmetics section of supermarkets. Mix 1/2 teaspoon of the oil with 1/2 teaspoon of water and gently wipe the affected region with the mixture (use a soft cloth).

    Wear Different Underwear

    • Sometimes wearing tight-fitting underwear, such as thongs, can worsen symptoms of vaginosis. Wearing breathable, loose underwear (such as cotton) can help alleviate symptoms.

    Practice Proper Cleanliness

    • When wiping, always do so from front to back. This prevents bacteria from the rectal region from developing within the vaginal region.

    Seek Treatment If Needed

    • In some cases, natural remedies may not cure vaginosis. You may then need to be put on either metronidazole or clindamycin to eradicate the infection.
