What Causes Herpes Outbreaks?

There are two types of herpes: simplex 1, or oral herpes, which generally manifests as cold sores, and simplex 2, or genital herpes, a common sexually transmitted disease. Both types are highly contagious and easily spread. Many people who have herpes do not know it because they never suffer an outbreak or have any symptoms. People with herpes should eat well and get plenty of exercise to try and prevent outbreaks.
  1. Sex

    • Some people who have herpes suffer recurrent outbreaks because of the friction caused during sexual intercourse. A water-based lubricant can help prevent these recurrences.

    Illnesses

    • People with serious illnesses such as HIV and leukemia are more likely to suffer outbreaks of herpes because of their weakened immune systems. Simple illnesses such as fevers and infections can also make an outbreak more likely.

    Hormone Changes

    • When your body experiences a drastic swing in hormone levels, you are more likely to suffer a recurrence of genital herpes. The most common example of this is during pregnancy.

    Stress Level

    • If your stress level is high, you increase your odds of suffering an outbreak. Both physical and emotional stress can trigger a recurrence.

    Surgery

    • People with herpes who undergo surgery are more likely to have a recurrence.

    Alcohol Consumption

    • If you have herpes, you should try to limit your alcohol consumption to try and prevent recurrences.
