Purchase over-the-counter creams and suppositories. There are many brands available in prescription strength on the drugstore shelves, such as Monistat, eliminating the need to visit your doctor. These yeast infection medicines are easy to use and affordable in price.

Visit your health care provider and request an oral medication such as fluconazole (sold under the brand name Diflucan). Fluconazole is typically dispensed in a one-pill dose and is a good option if over-the-counter yeast infection treatments have failed to solve the problem.

Use boric acid suppositories. Boric acid has been shown in studies to be as effective as prescription yeast infection medications when used at a dose of 600mg per day for 14 days.

Take probiotic supplements. Probiotics, in particular Lactobacillus, can restore the balance of good bacteria in the vaginal tract, which fights the overgrowth of Candida. Probiotics can be purchased at health food stores and are most effective when used in their refrigerated form, as probiotics quickly lose potency if stored on the shelf.

Eat yogurt. Yogurt contains probiotics in the form of Lactobacillus acidophilus and can not only fight yeast infections but also prevent them when eaten on a regular basis. It’s best to eat plain, unsweetened yogurt because sugar feeds Candida. If you can’t tolerate the slightly sour taste, add some natural sweetener in the form of honey or fruit.

Apply tea tree oil cream to your vulva on a daily basis until the yeast infection subsides. Tea tree oil contains anti-bacterial properties, making it versatile and effective. You can also place lubricant on a tampon, then apply a few drops of tea tree oil to it and insert in the vagina. The lubricant keeps the tampon from absorbing the oil.
