The High Frequency Treatment of Fibroids
Focused ultrasound surgery uses high-frequency ultrasound treatment to surgically remove fibroids in a woman's uterus. This form of treatment uses magnetic resonance imaging to locate uterine fibroids that receive the ultrasound treatment. This non-invasive procedure is approved by the FDA for treatment of uterine fibroids.-
Focused Ultrasound Surgery
-
According to the Mayo Clinic, doctors may use focused ultrasound surgery to treat uterine fibroids without surgically removing the uterus. Women who want to bear children may choose this noninvasive form of fibroid treatment.
MRI Scanner
-
Doctors use a magnetic resonance imaging scanner to see the inside of a woman's uterus and identify fibroids that are to be ablated with ultrasound treatment.
Ultrasound
-
Physicians use high-energy and high-frequency sound waves to ablate or destroy fibroid tumors. Ultrasound allows uterine fibroids to be destroyed without the risks of invasive surgery.
Treatment Session
-
A doctor may perform several ablations of fibroid tumors during one session of focused ultrasound surgery. An ultrasound session may last for several hours. Recovery time is minimal.
Other Treatments
-
Other treatments for uterine fibroids include endometrial ablation that uses heat or electricity to destroy the lining of the uterus; uterine artery embolization that cuts off the blood supply to fibroids; or surgical removal of a woman's fibroids or uterus.
