Signs and Symptoms of Yeast Infection in the Human Body
A yeast infection is a women's vaginal disorder caused by the fungus Candida albicans, according to women's health website WomensHealth.org. This is the same fungus that causes thrush in the mouth. The fungus is present in many healthy women, but when the body gets out of balance chemically, it can cause a sudden increase in the amount of fungus present in the vagina and lead to a number of unpleasant symptoms.-
Redness and Swelling
-
One of the most common signs that a yeast infection is occurring is the presence of redness and swelling around the vulva. This redness is often accompanied by discomfort and a burning sensation, especially during urination. While this symptom is a regular part of a yeast infection, it could be caused from another source and should be checked out by a doctor.
Severe Itching
-
Yeast infections cause severe itching of the vagina. This itching is usually present inside as well as outside the vagina and the surrounding area (the vulva). The temptation to scratch the itch is likely to be extreme, and this scratching can lead to a worsening of the condition and additional discomfort.
Vaginal itching can be a sign of other conditions as well, including STDs, vaginitis, stress, and the onset of menopause. A doctor should be consulted immediately if the itching persists.
Discharge
-
Vaginal discharge commonly occurs with a yeast infection, according to the National Institutes of Health. The combination of this discharge, swelling, and itching is typically an easy yeast infection diagnosis for physicians.
The discharge may have a starchy odor and appear white and chunky like cottage cheese. The appearance of the discharge may vary from woman to woman, and could be clear and thick, white and watery, or even yellowish in color.
Since the walls of the vagina secrete mucus under healthy circumstances as well, it is important to determine if the discharge is of a normal variety or an abnormal discharge. A sudden change of color, odor, or consistency may indicate a yeast infection.
Pain
-
Vaginal pain is a common sign of a yeast infection. Pain could be present as urine passes out of the body and the acid in the urine makes contact the infected external skin. Pain may also be associated with the itching and burning sensation felt on the vulva and inside the vagina.
It is not unusual for pain during sexual intercourse to be felt during the onset of a yeast infection. The stress on the vaginal walls during sex may irritate the infected skin, causing more serious burning or uncomfortable pressure.
