Fibroid Tumors & Constipation

Uterine fibroid tumors are noncancerous growths in a woman's uterus that are most likely to occur during her childbearing years. Fibroids may cause constipation and other symptoms that can be treated by a doctor.
  1. Constipation

    • According to the Mayo Clinic, constipation is a bowel disorder that causes less frequent bowel movements, straining during bowel movements and a feeling of rectal blockage.

    Other Symptoms

    • According to the Mayo Clinic, fibroid tumor patients may experience other symptoms in addition to constipation including heavy menstrual bleeding, prolonged menstrual periods and pelvic pain.

    Risk Factors

    • African American women and women with a family history of uterine fibroid tumors have an increased risk of developing this condition.

    Tests

    • Doctors frequently discover uterine fibroids during a routine pelvic examination or an ultrasound examination of the uterus. A hysteroscopy is a procedure in which a small lighted tube with a telescope is inserted into a woman's uterus to get detailed images of potential fibroid tumors.

    Treatment

    • Heavy bleeding or pelvic pressure may be treated with medications such as Lupron or a progestin-releasing device that is placed in the uterus. Surgical removal of fibroids or a hysterectomy may be needed when a woman's symptoms are severe or recurring.
