What is fecal stasis?
Fecal stasis is a condition characterized by the slowed movement of stool through the colon, resulting in constipation and incomplete bowel movements. It occurs when stool remains in the colon for an extended period, often due to weak muscle contractions or other factors that impair colonic motility. The stool becomes hard and dry, making it difficult or painful to pass. Other symptoms of fecal stasis may include abdominal pain, gas, bloating, nausea, and loss of appetite. Fecal stasis can be caused by various underlying conditions such as inadequate fiber intake, certain medications, dehydration, neurological or muscular disorders, and certain medical conditions. Treatment typically involves lifestyle changes like increased fluid and fiber intake, dietary modifications, and possibly laxatives or other medications.
