Signs & Symptoms of High DHEA Levels in Women

DHEA, also known as dehydroepiandrosterone, is a steroid hormone secreted by the adrenal glands. It works as a precursor for estrogens (female sex hormones) and androgens (male sex hormones). When women have high DHEA levels, certain signs and symptoms can present themselves.
  1. Polycystic Ovarian Syndrome

    • This sign is actually a medical condition. The ovaries of women with this condition contain many small cysts along each ovary's outer edge, and the ovaries are enlarged. Women with this condition often experience excess hair growth, prolonged menstrual periods, obesity and acne, according to the Mayo Clinic.

    Insulin Resistance

    • Insulin resistance occurs when the body becomes resistant to insulin's effects. This results in the body needing more insulin for the effects of insulin to be felt. According to Diabetes Life, those with insulin resistance can experience fatigue, high blood pressure, poor memory, weight gain, feeling tired after eating, and brief, mild periods of low blood sugar.

    Addison's Disease

    • Women with high DHEA levels may experience Addison's disease. This condition occurs when the adrenal glands do not produce enough of certain hormones. The symptoms include fatigue, depression, muscle weakness, irritability, reduced appetite, joint pain, weight loss, muscle pain, skin darkening, nausea, low blood pressure, diarrhea, fainting, vomiting, low blood sugar and salt cravings, according to the Mayo Clinic.
