Successful PCOS Treatment
Polycystic ovary syndrome, or PCOS, is the most common cause of infertility in women, according to the National Women's Health Information Center. PCOS can cause women to have irregular menstrual cycles, altered "male" hormonal levels (called androgens) and ovarian cysts.-
Birth Control Pills
-
According to the Mayo Clinic, doctors can prescribe a low dose birth control pill to boost "female hormones" for women with PCOS, such as estrogen and progesterone. Birth control pills may also help women to reverse other PCOS related problems, such as excessive hair growth and acne.
Anti-androgens
-
Some doctors also prescribe medications called anti-androgens to control excessive hair growth in women with PCOS. These may be used alone, or in combination with birth control pills.
Diabetes Medications
-
For women who do want to get pregnant, some symptoms of PCOS can be treated with diabetes medications. The Mayo Clinic reports that when taken over time, these medications can help return ovulation to normal. They may also regulate the balance of male and female hormones in the body.
Lifestyle Changes
-
The American Pregnancy Association recommends women with PCOS maintain a healthy weight, in order to keep insulin levels in check. Regular diet and exercise can regulate the menstrual cycle without the use of medications.
Laparoscopy
-
If other treatments fail, a procedure called "ovary drilling" may be performed. The National Women's Health Information Center reports that this involves applying a current to the ovary, which can help regulate hormonal levels and return ovulation to normal.
