Supplements for Fibroids
Uterine fibroids are benign growths of abnormal muscle cells that can form on both the interior or exterior wall of the uterus.-
The Facts
-
About 20 percent to 30 percent of all women develop fibroids, usually in their late 30s to early 40s. African-American women are over three times more likely to develop fibroids than other women.
Risk Factors
-
Researchers believe genetics may play a role in the development of fibroids. High levels of estrogen may be a factor as well.
Symptoms
-
In about 50 percent of all cases no symptoms occur. Fibroids may cause heavy or frequent menstrual periods, anemia, bleeding between periods, fatigue and weakness, vaginal discharge, pain during intercourse, and pain in the legs, back, or pelvis. Fibroids can also exert pressure on the bowels and bladder or block the urethra, causing kidney obstruction.
Helpful
-
Immune-boosting and detoxifying supplements, such as coenzyme Q10, garlic, maitake and shiitake mushrooms, vitamins A and C, and the amino acids L-arginine and L-lysine, along with a multivitamin, and mineral antioxidant supplement, are all helpful.
Expert Insight
-
Although the role of estrogen in the development of fibroids is not fully understood, James F. Balch, M.D., says women with fibroids should avoid high-estrogen oral contraceptives because they may encourage fibroid growth.
