Natural Cramp Relief
Menstruation is not a favorite time of the month for any woman, but it becomes even less pleasant than usual when cramps accompany it. Cramps are, at the very least, unpleasant, and at worse can leave you in bed, in too much pain to move. There are a number of ways to relieve cramps, many of them more natural alternatives than standard pain medication.-
Diet
-
The first, and most encompassing, way to reduce the discomfort level of your menstrual cramps is to eat a healthy, balanced diet. Make sure your diet is high in calcium, zinc, and the B vitamins. B6 is especially beneficial, but caution must be taken not to consume more than 100mg per day as it can cause unpleasant side effects. These vitamins not only reduce the intensity of cramping, but can reduce bloating as well. It's also helpful to reduce the amount of caffeine, salt and sugar that you consume near and during your period, as they can make cramps and bloating worse.
Heat
-
Heat is a frequently recommended way to soothe muscles, whether cramping or aching, and menstrual cramps are no exception. Applying a heating pad or hot water bottle to your back or stomach can be a source of relief from the cramping. Be careful not to apply a heating device to bare skin, to avoid burning. In rare occasions, cramping can be caused by a buildup of blood in the pelvis, in which case heat will not be beneficial. If heat does not help, try an ice pack, which would encourage the blood to move back to the extremities and out of the pelvis.
Another source of relief from heat comes in the form of a warm bath. Not only does the heat of the water soothe tense muscles and reduce the pain of cramping, but adding aromatherapy bath salts can create an even greater soothing experience. The relaxation of the scented salts can aid in relaxing the body and reducing the cramping pain of tensed muscles.
Exercise
-
While exercise is probably the last thing considered by women with severe menstrual cramps, it can actually help to relieve them. Working out on a regular basis at times other than during your menstrual period can increase muscle strength and reduce the discomfort you experience during your period. However, working out during your menstrual period is still a good idea as long as you choose a gentle activity. Walking, swimming and yoga are all excellent activities to provide a gentle, therapeutic workout that will reduce the discomfort from cramps.
