What Are the Signs of Fibroid Tumors?
Fibroid tumors are non-cancerous growths on or in the uterus. Although uterine fibroids often have no symptoms, there are several common signs of fibroid tumors, as indicated by Penn State's Hershey Medical Center and Cedars-Sinai Hospital.-
Changes in Menstrual Cycle
-
Changes in your menstrual pattern may be a sign of fibroid tumors. Symptoms include bleeding between periods, heavy menstrual bleeding (sometimes with blood clots), longer than normal menstrual periods, and increased cramping or pain with periods.
Abdominal Signs
-
A sensation of fullness or pressure in the lower abdomen or unusual gas or constipation may indicate fibroids. Sometimes, women develop an enlarged abdomen, which they mistake for weight gain.
Pain
-
Fibroid tumors may cause pain during sex, pain in the back of the legs or pelvic pain.
Other Signs
-
Fibroids can also cause pressure on the bladder, creating a constant feeling of needing to urinate, or pressure on the colon that can lead to constipation or bloating.
Expert Insight
-
Penn State's Hershey Medical Center recommends that you see your gynecologist or other health-care professional if you have gradual changes in your menstrual pattern or if you develop fullness or heaviness in your lower abdomen.
