Home Remedy for Bacterial Vaginosis

Bacterial vaginosis (BV) is caused by an imbalance of bacteria in the vagina and an overgrowth of harmful bacteria. Visiting a doctor will usually result in a prescription for an oral antibiotic. The only problem with these antibiotics is that they not only kill the bad bacteria, but the good as well. There are several home remedies for bacterial vaginosis that are just as effective as doctor prescribed antibiotics that does not kill the good bacteria that is needed for a healthy pH balance. These home remedies are easy to use, cheap and all-natural.
  1. Contributing Factors and Symptoms

    • The overgrowth and imbalance of bacteria that cause bacterial vaginosis are usually a result of an environment that is moist and warm. Wearing pants that are too tight or not wearing underwear that is 100% cotton can contribute to the growth of this bacteria. It is not a sexually transmitted disease and is not contagious. Most women in their lifetime will suffer from BV. The symptoms of bacterial vaginosis include a whitish-grey discharge, fishy odor and itching and irritation of the vaginal area. The fishy odor is the most troublesome of the symptoms. Women who suffer from bacterial vaginosis are generally self conscious about the odor and will sometimes withdraw.

    Yogurt

    • Yogurt has long been used as a source of good bacteria. The bacteria in yogurt will kill the bad bacteria growing in the vagina and balance the pH levels. Using yogurt to fight off bacterial vaginosis is as simple as eating a couple of cups a day. For a more immediate treatment, apply plain yogurt to a tampon and insert it into the vagina. Leave it in for about an hour. Do this regularly to get rid of all the symptoms.

    Apple Cider Vinegar

    • Apple cider vinegar has been used for centuries to fight off toxins. Its natural antibacterial tendencies fight off the bad bacteria that can cause a woman to suffer from bacterial vaginosis. Adding one to two cups of apple cider vinegar in your bath and soaking in it for about 20 minutes are all that need to be done to create a healthy balance of bacteria in the vagina.

    Other Home Remedies

    • Using tea tree oil will also effectively treat BV. A few drops of the oil in your bath water and a 20 minute soak is all that is needed. Rubbing several drops around the vaginal area also helps to treat BV.

Folic acid is a supplement that can be taken to treat and prevent BV. The use of garlic pills is also an effective remedy as garlic is a natural antibiotic. Both garlic pills and folic acid can be purchased at pharmacies or a local health food store.
