Is it Normal to Have Spotting in Between Periods?

Many women experience unexpected bleeding in between normal periods from time to time. This spotting can be normal or could signify a health issue in the reproductive system. A woman unsure of the cause of her spotting should see a doctor.
  1. Implantation

    • When a fertilized egg implants itself into the lining of the uterus, sometimes a little bit of the lining dislodges and causes light spotting.

    Birth Control

    • Changes to birth control can cause spotting. These changes include starting, stopping or changing forms of birth control. Spotting should subside as the body adjusts.

    Stress

    • Stress can wreak havoc on the female body. This includes mid-cycle bleeding. If a woman suspects stress is causing spotting, a doctor can recommend ways to alleviate it.

    Vaginal Distress

    • Vaginal dryness can sometimes cause bleeding; damage to the vagina from sex or gynecological examinations can cause it as well.

    Cancer

    • While most forms of mid-cycle bleeding are normal and can be resolved easily, sometimes it is caused by cancer. If you can not explain your bleeding by any other rationale, your doctor may want to test for cancer in the reproductive organs.
