Home Remedies for Yeast Infection or Itch

Yeast infections are very common, and although they can be seen occasionally in men, they typically affect girls and women after puberty. Yeast infections result from an overgrowth of the candida bacteria, a harmful bacteria that can quickly become overgrowth in the system. To treat yeast infections and yeast itch, a few strategies can eliminate the candida bacteria and treat the uncomfortable symptoms.
  1. Topical Remedies

    • To get rid of the itching and burning associated with a yeast infection quickly, apply aloe vera gel to the outside of the vagina. Aloe vera gel comes from the aloe vera plant, a succulent cactus found in the Southwest. Aloe vera gel is typically used on burn and cuts, but can also be used to relieve severe itching, even on the delicate skin around the vaginal canal. Squirt about a quarter-size amount of aloe vera gel onto a washcloth, the gently apply it to the outside of the vagina to relieve itching.

    Douches

    • Douches help flush out yeast-causing bacteria in the vaginal canal, and can be created using a tea tree oil, an antifungal and antimicrobial oil taken from the tea tree plant from Australia. Tea tree oil in its undiluted form is extremely strong, and could burn the vaginal canal if used straight. Therefore, diluting it for use in a douche is important. Combine 10 to 12 drops of tea tree oil with 2 cups of water, and pour it into the douche bag. Douche the vagina once per week.

    Suppositories

    • Suppositories can be inserted into the vaginal canal and deliver the powerful bacteria-killing compound to the candida yeast inside the vagina. According to Michigan State University, one of the most powerful yeast-killing natural suppositories is fresh, raw garlic, which is antimicrobial and powerful. To use garlic for a yeast infection, wrap one clove of peeled garlic in cheesecloth, and tie the end of it tightly with dental floss. Leave a tail of dental floss hanging so that you can pull the garlic out of the vagina in the same way you would a tampon. Keep the garlic suppository inside the vagina for at least three hours at a time.
