Oral Progesterone Side Effects
Oral progesterone is prescribed to treat symptoms associated with menstrual problems and for hormone replacement therapy after menopause. As with all prescription medications, side effects may occur while using progesterone.-
Side Effects

The most common side effects while taking oral progesterone include upset stomach, cramps, breast tenderness, drowsiness and dizziness. Most medications have an adjustment period while the body adapts.
Serious Side Effects

Oral progesterone has the potential of causing serious side effects. Contact a physician if abnormal vaginal bleeding, yellowing of the eyes and/or skin, depression, pain or swelling in the legs, vision problems, migraine headaches or darkened patches of skin occur.
Drug Interactions

Drug interactions may occur while using oral progesterone simultaneously with other medications. Possible medications that will cause interaction include sedatives, anxiety medications, anti-seizure drugs and narcotics.
Warnings

Some side effects of oral progesterone can be life-threatening. Seek medical attention immediately if allergic reaction, chest pain, shortness of breath, breast lumps, abnormal urination, fainting, confusion and numbness or weakness in the extremities occurs.
Precautions

Oral progesterone can be used in combination therapy with estrogen for hormone replacement. The two-drug combination can increase the risk of breast cancer, heart disease, stroke, dementia and blood clots.
