What Are the Symptoms of Yeast Infection?

A vaginal yeast infection is a common occurrence amongst women and is the result of an overabundance of Candida albicans, which is a fungus. The area around the vulva and vagina are affected by this fungus. Over-the-counter medications are available to treat vaginal yeast infections, but some may require a more intensive medication that a physician can prescribe.
  1. Redness

    • Candida albicans is an irritant to the vaginal area and because of this there will likely be redness and burning. This reddened patch appears as a rash and will sometimes have bumps on it.

    Itching

    • The itching of a yeast infection can be intense. A physician can prescribe an ointment to ease this symptom. Scratching the vaginal area will leave you more vulnerable to infection.

    Burning On Urination

    • Because the vaginal area is red and excoriated, a burning discomfort will be felt as urine passes through the area. Some women withhold urinating due to the discomfort that it brings them.

    Pain During Sexual Intercourse

    • Similar to the pain felt when urinating, sexual intercourse can further irritate the already inflamed vulva. It is best to abstain from sexual intercourse during this time until the yeast infection has been cured.

    Discharge

    • A yeast infection is noted for expelling a discharge from the vagina. This discharge is generally white in color and thick. The consistency of the discharge is similar to that of a cottage cheese appearance.

    Medications

    • The most commonly used medications to treat a yeast infection are miconazole and Diflucan. Miconazole is a topical antifungal medication that is inserted by applicator into the vagina. This is done for a varied amount of days depending on the severity of the infection. Diflucan is an oral treatment for a yeast infection. Your physician will inform you of the medication that will work best for your circumstance.

    Prevention

    • There are several things that you can do to prevention a yeast infection, such as wearing underwear made from a cotton material and avoiding douches and bubble baths. If your clothes become wet you should change them as soon as possible. Hot tubs are also not encouraged.
