Itchy Scaly Scalp Treatment

An itchy scalp can be an irritating side effect of the hair growth cycle and may be caused by conditions such as dandruff or by hair that has developed split ends and is difficult to manage. Happily, treating an itchy scalp may help reduce and reverse hair loss in men and women.
  1. Medicated Shampoos

    • Alternate between shampoos containing coal tar, zinc, salicylic acid and ketoconazole. Using a combination of shampoos such as Dermarest, Medi-Dan, and Nizoral may help neutralize the condition. Itchy scalp may be caused by dandruff buildup in the scalp and in the hair follicles. Shampoos containing one or more of the ingredients will remove dandruff flakes and promote healthy hair growth, including reducing and potentially reversing hair loss. Alternating between the shampoos each time you wash your hair is important to prevent it from becoming dry and overworked.

    Vinegar Rinse

    • Use a solution of half apple cider vinegar and half water after shampooing. Massage the solution thoroughly throughout the hair and scalp and leave there for five minutes. Rinse with lukewarm water and allow the hair to air-dry naturally. Avoid heated drying of the hair in order to prevent breaking the hair follicle and causing damage to the scalp. Comb and style the hair as normal after the hair has completely dried. Combing the hair before it has completely dried may cause breakage of the hair and hair loss.

    Regular Haircutting

    • Keep your hair a healthy, manageable length and monitor it for split ends, which causes hair to become more frizzy. Keeping it cut to a manageable length reduces irritation caused by dandruff and ingrown hair. Knowing the growth pattern and rate of your hair and getting it cut when it becomes difficult to manage helps keep the scalp, and in turn the hair, at its healthy best.

    Multivitamin

    • Using multivitamins, including all of the B varieties and biotin, as well as supplements such as saw palmetto, can help prevent the buildup of dandruff and an itchy scalp. For best results, take the vitamins at night before going to bed to repair hair while you sleep.
