Uncleanliness of the scalp is the most common reason for itchy scalp in children, also known as seborrheic dermatitis. This condition is a build up on the scalp of the oil naturally produced in the skin. Seborrheic dermatitis can be reduced by using a medicated shampoo to reduce the production of the oil.

If the child's itchy scalp persists and she also has a fever, you should seek medical attention to test your child for chicken pox or other communicable diseases. Chicken pox will affect the scalp and eventually cover the entire body.
