Rogaine Hair Loss Treatment

Rogaine is a treatment for people whose hair is gradually thinning. Both men and women can use this product. The active ingredient in Rogaine is minoxidil, which has been approved by the FDA for the use of regrowing hair. According to drugs.com, Rogaine may work by dilating blood vessels on the scalp, which stimulates hair follicle function and hair growth.

  1. Choosing Rogaine

    • Rogaine treats gradual hereditary hair loss. If you have family members, male or female, who have lost their hair and you have lately noticed more hair in your shower drain or on your hairbrush, then Rogaine may work for you. If your hair loss is sudden, patchy or associated with an illness or childbirth, Rogaine will probably not work for you. Do not use Rogaine on children under 18. Do not use this product if your hair loss is associated with an irritated or infected scalp.

    Using Rogaine

    • Apply Rogaine twice daily to your scalp. Don't apply it to your hair. Part your hair where it is thinning, apply Rogaine to your scalp, and massage it into your skin. Your hair should be dry when you apply Rogaine. If it is not possible to completely dry your hair first, towel dry to get out as much moisture as possible. Allow the Rogaine to dry completely before using other hair styling products. Use Rogaine consistently for at least four months before expecting to see results. You must continue to use Rogaine to maintain results, since hair loss will resume when you stop using the product.

      Rogaine is available in two forms. Rogaine for women is a liquid solution that contains two percent minoxidil. Measure the dose using the supplied medicine dropper. Rogaine for men is available as a solution or foam. Rogaine for men contains five percent minoxidil and should not be used by women. The liquid dosage for men is measured by a dropper. The amount of foam to use per application is determined by dispensing an amount equal to one half the size of the container cap.

    Side Effects

    • Rogaine may cause serious side effects if you are allergic to the product. These side effects include difficulty breathing, swelling of the face, hives and swelling of the tongue or throat. Get medical attention immediately for symptoms of an allergic reaction or cardiac-related symptoms such as chest pain, rapid pulse, irregular heartbeat, dizziness and fainting. Other, less serious side effects you may experience include headache, itching, redness, or dryness and flaking of the scalp.
