Scalp Reduction

Scalp reduction, also known as alopecia reduction, is a surgical procedure performed by a specially trained plastic surgeon. It is typically performed for the cosmetic treatment of baldness, but may also be used for reconstructive surgery. As a hair restoral procedure, scalp reduction is often performed in conjunction with hair transplantation and occasionally with a brow lift or other cosmetic procedure design to improve the overall appearance.
  1. Candidacy

    • Determine whether you are a good candidate for scalp reduction before undergoing this procedure. For scalp reduction to be effective you must have significant hair resources on the sides and back of your head. This procedure works by removing sections of the scalp that have little or no hair, and then stretching the skin containing good hair to cover the area that was removed. Donor hair may also be removed from the sides and back of the head to be grafted into the thin areas on the top to achieve a more aesthetically pleasing look. People who do not have significant hair resources on the sides and back of their head may not be good candidates for this procedure.

    Doctor-Patient Relationship

    • Choose a physician that you trust. Scalp reduction surgery is typically elective surgery, so you should take your time to find the best doctor for your particular needs. Ask questions regarding the doctor's training and qualifications. Ask where and when the doctor received his medical training. If the degree was obtained a number of years before, has there been followup training on the latest procedures? Is the physician board certified or a member of specialty organizations such as the International Society of Hair Restoration Surgery or the American Society of Plastic Surgeons? How much experience does the physician have with the type of procedure you are contemplating? Can you see before and after pictures of previous patients? Can you talk to previous patients regarding their experience? It is important to feel comfortable with the doctor who will be performing your scalp reduction surgery. If you are not satisfied with any of the answers you receive to your questions, you should seek a different physician.
