Treatment for Facial Hair Loss
Facial hair loss is similar to the loss of hair on top of your head. This loss of facial hair can come from many sources, such as stress, poor diet or hereditary. Luckily there are several treatment methods available to lost facial hair.-
Rogaine
-
Rogaine is a topical product that is placed directly on the area of hair loss. Although it is designed for the head, the medical product Minoxidil, the main ingredient in Rogaine, can be used to stop any sort of hair loss. Apply this product to the area twice a day--after you shower and about an hour before bed. Wash your hands after application, and avoid eye contact. If using the product on your eyebrows, try Rogaine Gel because it does not drip as much as the standard drops. The minor side effects include itching around the application area and occasionally flaking due to the Rogaine sticking to the surrounding hair.
Propecia
-
Propecia is the only clinically proven medication show to help regrow hair. This prescription medication is also available in generic form. A Propecia pill form is taken twice a day, once in the morning and evening. There is no major side effect, although about 2 percent of users experience a decreased libido.
Hair Transplant
-
If the other products have not corrected the issue, a follicle unit extraction (FUE) doctor can perform a hair transplant. Donor hair is removed from the back of your hairline. Once grafted in, it will grow and restimulate your hair follicles, which will result in the regrowth of your lost facial hair. The actual hair transplant takes a few hours, and you will be able to return home the same day. The hair that is transplanted in will be permanent, however, the other hair may continue to fall out. The only side effects are the swelling and irritation around the transplant site for a few days, but you should see your transplanted hair begin to grow within a few weeks.
The average hair graft costs around $5 per graft (as of September 2009), and you will most likely need hundreds, if not a few thousand grafts. This procedure is not covered by insurance because it's a cosmetic procedure.
