Dermatitis & Hair Loss Treatments

Dermatitis on the skin of the scalp may lead to hair loss. Scalp dermatitis is characterized by flaking skin and patches of scaly skin on the scalp. Treating hair loss caused by dermatitis is a simple process of following various home treatments involving scalp massage and various shampooing and scalp-conditioning treatments. Home-based treatments for hair loss caused by dermatitis are economical. Home treatments for dermatitis of the scalp also carry little risk of side effects, unlike pharmaceutical treatments.
  1. Medicated Shampoos

    • Use a medicated shampoo consisting of various combinations of coal tar, zinc, salicylic acid and ketoconazole. You may use an alternating nightly regimen of shampoos containing one or more of these ingredients. Use the pads of the fingers to massage the shampoo into the scalp. Common shampoos to treat dermatitis of the scalp include Neutrogena T-Gel, Nizoral and Dermarest. Leave the shampoo in the hair for a minimum of five minutes. Rinse with lukewarm water from the base of the neck toward the front of the scalp. Avoid blow-dying the hair.

    Scalp Massage

    • Use the pads of the fingers to massage the scalp from the base of the neck up. Use circular motions to work the fingers through the scalp. Performing scalp massage can be done simultaneously with shampooing, or can be done separately in order to stimulate blood flow to the scalp. Brush the hair with a pure boar bristle brush after a scalp massage in order to stimulate healthy hair growth.

    DHT Inhibitor

    • Use a DHT inhibitor topical cream or oral pill such as Propecia in order to decrease DHT production in the scalp. DHT is a potent form of testosterone that can starve the hair shaft. The herb saw palmetto may also be used, topically and in oral form, in order to reduce DHT levels in the scalp. DHT inhibitors work to decrease the level of DHT in the hair shaft.

    Vinegar Conditioner

    • Use a solution of equal parts apple cider vinegar and water. Massage the solution into the scalp after shampooing. Follow the same guidelines for applying shampoo to the scalp and the hair. Leave the vinegar in and let the hair dry naturally. After the hair has dried, rinse with lukewarm water. Brush the hair with a pure boar bristle brush in order to stimulate hair growth. The apple cider vinegar solution may also be applied during scalp massage.
