Cure For Hair Thinning On Vertex

You might experience hair thinning on the vertex (top) of the head for a variety of reasons, including male- or female-pattern baldness (losing hair gradually over time) or alopecia areata (hair loss in spots). Whatever the cause, there are treatments for these types of hair loss that will help you to cure hair thinning on the vertex.
  1. Scalp Cleansing

    • Use a shampoo that contains Clobetasol to treat hair loss. Clobetasol shampoo is thought to stimulate hair growth and possibly decrease hair loss. Shampoo the hair up to twice daily, and massage the vertex using a circular motion with the pads of your fingers to increase blood flow to the affected area. This product is available by prescription and is sold under several brand names. Consult with your doctor about the right brand for your hair-loss needs. If you experience any swelling or inflammation using the product, discontinue use.

    Propecia

    • The drug Propecia (finasteride) is especially effective in increasing hair growth in the vertex. Hair loss on the vertex is often attributable to excess dihydrotestosterone (DHT), a hormone that attacks the hair follicle by blocking nutrients from reaching the hair follicle. This causes the follicle to shrink and then fall out. Propecia is a pill that works to decrease DHT production so the hair follicle can store nutrients more efficiently. Propecia is available by prescription in tablet form and should be taken once daily to inhibit hair loss and increase growth in the vertex. It may take up to six months to see results while taking Propecia, and if the medication is stopped, hair loss will likely occur. Propecia is effective in approximately 65 percent of men and 33 percent of women. Pregnant or nursing women should not take, or even touch, Propecia tablets.

    Minoxidil

    • Minoxidil (Ioniten) is a topical ointment that can be combined with Propecia to increase hair growth in the vertex. This over-the-counter medication also works to decrease DHT accumulation in the hair follicle and is about 30 percent effective in reducing hair loss and increasing hair growth in both men and women. Apply Minoxidil twice daily and massage into the vertex area thoroughly to ensure adequate absorption and increase scalp stimulation.

    Cortisone

    • For hair loss in the vertex that does not respond to these medications, try cortisone treatments. These treatments are available in prescription topical ointments, tablets and injections. Because alopecia areata is thought to be caused by immune system rejection of the hair follicle, cortisone is used to treat the inflammation and immune system response caused by the reaction and reduce swelling that may lead to hair loss. Cortisone treatments work for both women and men who are suffering from hair loss and should be taken according to your doctors instructions.
