Natural Herbs for Thinning Hair

Hair loss is caused by many different things, such as stress, poor nutrition, hormone changes and poor circulation, Both men and women, generally over the age of 45, can begin to experience hair loss. Men can experience total pattern baldness where as women merely have thinning hair. Hair loss can affect one's self esteem and confidence. There are several natural ways that you can prevent or reverse thinning hair.
  1. Saw Palmetto

    • One of the causes of hair loss is the male hormone dihydrotestosterone (DHT). Saw palmetto is an herb that helps to block the formation of DHT in the body. Saw palmetto can be found in extract or tincture form and can be added to shampoos or, for more effective dosage, taken orally. This herb can help to restore the balance on the scalp by unclogging pores and promoting good circulation.

    Rosemary

    • Rosemary has been said to promote healthy hair. Rosemary is very rich in antioxidants, which help to restore balance in the scalp. Rosemary is sometimes mixed with almond oil and then massaged into the scalp to prevent thinning hair and baldness. Rosemary can also be used as a rinse after shampooing. Place 2 tbsp. fresh rosemary into a pitcher, pour 1 cup of hot water over it and allow it to steep for 10 to 20 minutes. Strain out the herb and add 1 tbsp. vinegar. Pour over the hair after a shampoo and do not rinse.

    Pygeum

    • Pygeum is an essential herb that is very much like saw palmetto. It is often used in conjunction with saw palmetto to help with prostate enlargement. The three main herbs that are used to help with male pattern baldness are saw palmetto, nettle root and pygeum africanum.

    Horsetail

    • Horsetail is one of the most common ingredients in shampoo treatments for hair loss. The most potent formula of horsetail is a freeze-dried capsule but for hair loss it is frequently taken as a tea. One tablespoon of crushed horsehair is used per cup of water. A small amount of sugar can be added for taste. Horsetail works to correct the hormonal imbalance that causes the hair loss.
