Scalp Treatments for Hair Loss

Hair loss can be an embarrassing sign of aging or a sign of another ailment in the body. The condition can be treated and reversed through a combination of natural and medical treatments for both the scalp and the hair follicles.
  1. Scalp Massage

    • Use the upper pads of the fingers to massage the scalp. Begin at the base of the back of the neck and slowly work your way up the back of the head towards the sides of the head and eventually the front of the head. Massaging the scalp helps to reveal the natural moisture of the scalp. It has also been shown to improve growth of the hair by promoting blood circulation to the scalp.

    Medicated Shampoo

    • Use a medicated shampoo which contains a mixture of coal tar, salicylic acid and zinc pyrithione. Shampooing the hair two or three times each week with a medicated shampoo relieves severe dandruff in adults. Severe dandruff in adults is also known as seborrheic dermatitis. Seborrheic dermatitis causes flaking dry scales on the scalp, which can eventually lead to hair loss. Shampoo the hair from the back of the neck. Work the lather from the shampoo through the scalp and the hair follicles using the pads of the fingers. Leave medicated shampoos in the hair for at least five minutes. Rinse shampoos from the hair by reversing the process you use when you apply the shampoo. Use lukewarm water for rinsing shampoo to allow the ingredients to remain in the follicles after washing.

    Vitamins

    • Vitamins play an important role in the hair growth cycle. Vitamin A, Vitamin C, Vitamin H (also known as biotin) and L-Cysteine work to form the structure of the hair from the root of the hair to the tip of the follicle. Whether vitamins are found in the foods we eat or in the form of supplements, daily adequate vitamin intake is essential to the scalp when treating hair loss.

    Herbs

    • Use herbal hair styling aids and creams, such as those containing rosemary, stinging nettle and jojoba oil. Stinging nettle, rosemary and jojoba oil nourish the scalp as you begin to grow hair by adding strength, texture and shine to the new hair.

    DHT inhibitor

    • Changing hormones and abnormal secretions of the hormone DHT can cause baldness. Use an herb, such as saw palmetto, to inhibit the production of DHT from affecting the scalp. High levels of DHT bind to the hair shaft, causing hair to lose thickness and pigment during the growth cycles.

    Stimulation

    • Stimulate the hair twice each day using a boar bristle hairbrush. Brush the hair from front to back. Use the boar bristle brush immediately prior to shampooing the hair to allow the shampoo to effectively penetrate the scalp in order to help the hair begin to grow.

    Patience

    • Be patient when you are trying to grow your hair. Most hair loss does not happen overnight. Hair growth also does not happen overnight. You may notice that there are days when the hair grows rapidly, while other days there is little growth, perhaps even a little shedding.
