Rogaine Alternatives

When it comes to battling baldness, Rogaine is one of the first remedies that typically comes to mind. But there are alternatives to Rogaine--many, in fact. From other over-the-counter medications to herbal remedies to simple behavioral changes, there are other ways to combat hair loss outside of Rogaine.
  1. Other Medications

    • Several quite effective over-the-counter medications exist designed specifically to halt hair loss--and even spur re-growth, in many cases. Though Rogaine is the most well-known, another medication is Propecia. Generic minoxidil (the ingredient in Rogaine) can also be purchased at any drug store. Minoxidil has been proven since the 1970s to prevent or at least slow additional hair loss, and is typically applied to the scalp twice a day. Propecia, on the other hand, is a pill, taken once daily.

    Wheat Germ Oil

    • Wheat germ oil is an extremely rich, unrefined oil. It is packed with vitamins D, A and E, and is rich in protein. This unique oil is extracted from the wheat germ plant (Triticum vulgare). Once extracted, it lasts for about eight months. Keep wheat germ oil in a cool place, as high temperatures tend to degrade its quality. A few drops of wheat germ oil are typically massaged into the scalp, either all over or in spots where signs of hair loss are most evident.

    Other Herbal Remedies

    • Apart from wheat germ oil, a myriad of herbal remedies exist for combating hair loss. These include the rubbing of red pepper flesh across the scalp, which is said to draw nutrients to the scalp area and promote hair re-growth. Aloe vera, rubbed generously into the hair and scalp, is also said to be beneficial. Several cups of green tea drunk on a daily basis can also help, and herbalists swear that stinging nettle roots are fantastic for promoting hair re-growth.

    Habitual Changes

    • Several simple behavioral changes can make a big difference when it comes to a hair-loss problem. Avoid washing your hair with really hot water, and try not to shampoo your hair more than two or three times per week. Make a habit of massaging your scalp, vigorously, for about 15 minutes after every bath or shower; this draws blood to the scalp area and can strengthen the individual hair follicles on your head.
