Is It Possible to Regrow Hair?

Balding can be difficult for some men, particularly in today's beauty-obsessed society, and nearly 40 percent of all men under the age of 35 experience some symptoms of hair loss. Regrowing hair follicles is possible, but only if they are either dormant or simply damaged. While there are a couple of products that can help stimulate regrowth of nearly dormant hair follicles, such as Rogaine and Propecia, it is impossible to bring back hair that is no longer there.
  1. Pharmaceutical Products That Regrow Hair

    • The two active chemicals in most hair regrowth products are finasteride and minoxidil, both of which stimulate dormant or damaged follicles and foster hair growth. Their limitation is that they must continually be used or the hair will die again. Cost is an issue, as using Rogaine or Propecia daily will run about $30 per month.

    Other Products That Might Help

    • There are a number of other products that combine finasteride and minoxidil with herbal additives or are a combination of herbal remedies. Because the FDA has only approved the two chemicals mentioned above for hair renewal, there is a possibility the other products will not work.

    Other Ways to Regrow Hair

    • One method of actually regrowing hair is surgery, in which healthy hair, usually taken from the back of the head, is transplanted to the desired area. Not only are these operations expensive, but the quality of the regrowth greatly depends on who performs the surgery.

    How We Lose Hair

    • A typical human being loses between 50 and 100 strands of hair each day, but a healthy head of hair grows others to take their place. Treating your hair with chemicals or straighteners can make the hair fall out prematurely, as can heavy brushing or tight ponytails. Ringworm can also cause hair loss near infected areas.

    Ways to Protect Your Hair

    • Stress is a major contributor to most health conditions, including hair loss, so breathing, meditation and relaxation are recommended, as is eating a healthy diet full of protein, and keeping your scalp clean.
