What Causes Hair to Break?

The causes of hair breakage include your personal habits, the use of certain types of hair care products and exposure to environmental conditions. Consider this information from the American Academy of Dermatology and the Mayo Clinic about what causes hair to break.
  1. Towel Drying

    • If you use a towel to vigorously rub your hair dry, your hair may break off at the root or middle of the strand.

    Wet Combing

    • Combing your hair while it is still wet can result in hair breakage especially if your hair is long.

    Excessive Brushing

    • Brushing your hair too much may cause it to break at the root as well as creating split ends.

    Pulling

    • Pulling on your hair with your fingers, or from tight hair styles such as ponytails or braids can cause your hair to break.

    Appliances

    • Using appliances such as curling or straightening irons or hair dryers may damage your hair and cause it to break.

    Chemicals

    • Applying chemicals to your hair, such as relaxers, perms or dyes may break your hair at the root or lower on the strands.

    Sunlight

    • Your hair can break from frequent or prolonged exposure to sunlight or tanning booths, which weakens the chemical structure of your hair.
