Hair Loss Solutions for Women

From strong prescription medications to mild over-the-counter supplements, there are several ways to combat hair loss in women. Many of the remedies were originally meant for men, and weren't even developed to combat hair loss, but work on some patients remarkably. Hair transplants are an option, but should only be considered after all other options have been exhausted.
  1. Diagnosis

    • The first step is to be properly diagnosed for hair loss. A dermatologist is a good place to start.

    Minoxidil

    • Minoxidil (Rogaine) is the most common solution for hair loss in women. It can be used at men's strength for effectiveness. Minoxidil can cause irritation, itching and dryness, which can be remedied by having your doctor customize your prescription.

    Propecia and Proscar

    • Enzyme blockers Propecia (1 mg) and Proscar (5 mg) also can be used to fight hair loss in women. The drugs were originally used for prostate disease and hair loss for men. Pregnant women should not use it.

    Aldactone

    • The diuretic and testosterone inhibitor Aldactone (spironolactone) is another powerful remedy, but can cause breast tenderness. It works by targeting enzyme receptors in the follicle.

    Other Remedies

    • Over-the-counter remedies, many which contain zinc and biotin, are also available to women who are trying to combat hair loss. Hair transplants are available, and doctors advise using this remedy as a last resort.
