Change your shampoo. Read the ingredients to see the chemicals it contains, its pH factor and if it has alcohol (which can dry the scalp). You might also be allergic to some of the ingredients. If you are not sure about what shampoo to use, visit a reputable hair salon and ask for advice. Get a scalp treatment and wash while you are there.

Add moisture to your scalp by using hot oil treatments once a week. Buy a tube of hot oil, snip off the top and place into a glass of hot water to heat for about 3 minutes. Pour it on your hair, work it through your hair, and massage the scalp (follow directions on the oil treatment box). Rinse and style your hair as usual.

Regular household products, such as olive oil or mayonnaise can also be used to lubricate the scalp and treat your hair. Heat about 1/4 glass of either the above products (not too hot or it will burn your scalp). Massage it onto the scalp and hair and leave it on for about 3 to 4 minutes. Rinse and style your hair as usual.

Call a dermatologist for an appointment if nothing seems to help stop the itching after self treating your scalp for a week. You might have developed a skin condition that needs professional treatment and diagnosis.
