How to Check for Nits

Nits, or head lice eggs, are a sign of a lice infestation and found attached to the shaft of the hair. Although they resemble dandruff flakes, nits cannot be brushed away, and because of their small size and pale color, are sometimes difficult to detect during a casual inspection of the hair and scalp. Fortunately, there are several ways to effectively check for the presence of nits and lice in order to determine if head lice treatment is required.

Instructions

    • 1

Wash the hair in question thoroughly and comb through it with a regular comb. Nits are easier to spot against wet hair, and may be immediately visible to another person during a routine combing.

    • 2

Using a special nit comb, which can be purchased at the drug store, start at the base of the neck and work forward, gently combing through hair. Be on the lookout for a red rash at the nape of the neck, as well as white or beige-colored particles attached to the hair shafts that are not easily brushed or combed away. Rinse the comb each time any nits or dead lice are discovered, and continue the inspection.

    • 3

If nits, live lice or dead lice are discovered, discard all combs and brushes used by the affected individual, and perform a similar nit examination on anyone who has had close personal contact with that person to determine if they too have nits and/or lice.
