What causes dry hair?
There are multiple factors that can contribute to dry hair. Some common causes include:
- Genetics: Dry hair can be inherited from your parents.
- Environmental factors: Excessive exposure to sun, wind, and cold weather can dry out the hair.
- Chemical treatments: Hair dyes, perms, and other chemical treatments can strip the hair of its natural oils, making it more prone to dryness.
- Aging: Hair naturally becomes drier as a person ages, due to decreased production of natural oils (sebum) in the scalp.
- Medical conditions: Certain medical conditions such as hypothyroidism, diabetes, and eating disorders can cause dry hair as a symptom.
- Medications: Some medications as a side effect can cause dryness of the hair.
- Poor diet: A diet lacking in essential vitamins and nutrients can result in dry hair.
- Improper hair care routine: Over-washing the hair, using harsh shampoos, and not using conditioner can all lead to dry hair.
- Excessive use of heat styling tools: Heat styling tools such as blow dryers, flat irons, and curling wands can damage the hair, making it more susceptible to dryness.
- Swimming in chlorinated water: Chlorine can strip the hair of its natural oils.
