How do I Get Rid of the Buzzing Noise When Using a Phone With a Hearing Aid?

Hearing aids help those with hearing loss to still hear despite their condition. However, hearing aids can produce buzzing sounds, especially when you are using a phone. The buzzing sound can be annoying and may even cause headaches. This doesn't mean that your hearing aid needs to be replaced; you just need to troubleshoot it to stop the buzzing sounds.

Check the battery of your hearing aid frequently by raising and lowering the volume and making sure you can hear without any difficulties. Buzzing can occur when a battery is running down. Hearing aid batteries typically last for about two weeks and should be changed regularly. Remove the batteries if for some reason you are not using the hearing aid for two days or more. This will keep the batteries from draining unnecessarily and allow the hearing aid to "air out."

Keep your hearing aid clean. Never use soap and water on the hearing aid when cleaning the hearing aid. Use either a micro fiber cloth or a small soft cleaning brush. Be sure to clean the inside parts that touch the inside of your ear and the buttons and switches as well.

Hold the telephone or the cell phone in a different position while you are using it. Some hearing aids have switches marked with the letters "T" which means Telecoil and "M" for microphone. Switch to "T" when you are on the phone and see if the buzzing goes away. Switch back to "M" when you are done.

Look for cell phones with a high "M" and "T" ratings. These cell phones will work best with all types of hearing aids and give you the least amount of negative feedback and other annoying sounds.
