What Are the Causes of Spotting in a Beard?

Bald patches in a man's facial hair are a source of annoyance for the man who wants to grow a beard, mustache or goatee. In general, these bald spots are not cause for alarm unless the baldness spreads to other areas of the body, especially the scalp or eyebrows. Most bald spots in facial hair are caused by a common condition known as alopecia areata.

Alopecia Areata

• Alopecia areata is a type of hair loss in which baldness develops, sometimes very quickly, in the form of small, round patches on the scalp or face. Although scientists have not pinpointed what triggers alopecia areata, it is thought to be symptomatic of an autoimmune disease in which the immune system "attacks" hair follicles, thinking they are a foreign body. If you notice a bald patch where hair once grew, you probably are affected by alopecia areata. If you have only a small spot or two on your beard without other significant hair loss, you probably do not have a severe case that merits medical attention.

Hereditary Link

• Alopecia areata can be hereditary in some cases. According to dermatologist Dr. Norman Goldstein, one in five people who suffer alopecia areata have had a family member with the condition. Those most at risk may have family members who have suffered eczema, asthma, hay fever or other autoimmune disorders.

Treatments and Prognosis

• A mild case of alopecia areata is usually treated by doing nothing. The condition often goes away on its own. The hair will grow back after several months. In some cases, rubbing Minoxidil on the affected areas has been said to promote new hair growth, though it may take several months to see results. If the bald patch gets larger or if you notice bald spots in other areas of the head and face, consult your physician.
