Abacore Hair Growth Treatment

Avacor is a hair loss treatment available for both men and women. Avacor's Physician's Topical Formula is the only product in the Avacor line of products contain minoxidil, a drug proven to regrow hair. There have been multiple consumer claims filed against Avacor, charging that Avacor has misrepresented its product and inflated claims of efficacy in regrowing hair.
  1. Physician's Formula

    • Avacor offers products aimed at treating hair loss for both men and women. Avacor's topical formula for women contains 2% minoxidil, while the men's formula contains 5 percent minoxidil. The topical formula contains minoxidil (known as Avacor's Physician's Formula), the only FDA-approved drug for hair regrowth.

    Minoxidil

    • The FDA banned the marketing of all over-the-counter hair growth products, except for those products specifically approved by the agency. As of 2010, only minoxidil and finasteride have been approved as effective hair growth drugs. Minoxidil is found in Rogaine and Avacor, while finasteride is found in Propecia. These three products are all available in topical formulations.

    Use

    • Avacor uses a three-part system that promotes hair regrowth. The first step is a "scalp detoxifying shampoo;" the second, Physician's Formula; the third, "Nutricap." In addition to a small amount of the FDA-approved minoxidil, Avacor contains a number of commonly-found herbs to fortify its product: ginko, saw palmetto, and horsetail are all found in Avacor. Only minoxidil is proven to regrow hair.

    Side-Effects

    • Avacor is not associated with any common, major side effects. However, a small number of users may experience dizziness, headaches, or weight gain. Anyone experiencing any of these side effects should immediately discontinue Avacor and consult a doctor. Common, minor side effects include local irritation or skin reaction and mild heartburn or nausea.

    Drawbacks of Avacor

    • Avacor costs approximately $230 for a 2 to 3 month supply of product as of 2010, putting a year's supply over $1,100. There are no peer-reviewed clinical studies indicating Avacor is an effective hair regrowth treatment option. Hair regrowth can take up to eight months for women and twelve months for men. Given the cost and lack of clinical evidence, Avacor can be an expensive gamble for any individual hoping for hair regrowth.
