Hair Growth Treatment for Men

Hair, or its loss, can play an important role in a man's self-image. If you are losing hair and do not want to wear a hairpiece, hair growth treatments are available.
  1. Hair Loss

    • Androgenic alopecia, or male pattern baldness, is the main cause of hair loss in men. A combination of hormones and genetics causes your hair follicles to stop growing new hair. There are two FDA approved treatments for men: minoxidle and finasteride.

    Minoxidil

    • Minoxidil is available without a prescription. Applied topically to your scalp, it slows hair loss for many men and can stimulate dormant follicles into growing hair again.

    Finasteride

    • Finasteride is available only by prescription. Taken in the form of a pill, it blocks the production of a hormone that can contribute to hair loss. It prevents future hair loss and allows for hair growth to begin again.

    Complications

    • Medications for hair growth treatment in men can cause complications. Minoxidil could cause itchy, burning scalp. Finasteride can cause sexual side effects in men and could lead to birth defects in the children of pregnant women who come in contact with it.

    Considerations

    • The effects of hair growth treatments for men last only as long as you take them. If you stop treatment, your baldness will return.
