Hypertension Hair Growth

Hair growth can be influenced by several factors, including hormones, major illnesses and underlying medical conditions. If you are undergoing treatment for hypertension, you could see a change in your hair growth.
  1. Hypertension

    • According to the National Institutes of Health, hypertension is high blood pressure. Elevated blood pressure usually has no symptoms.

    Hair Growth

    • Hair growth in normal circumstances follows a cycle in which a follicle grows a hair, rests, then sheds the hair and begins the cycle again. Hair growth can be affected by medication, including that used to treat hypertension.

    Minoxidil

    • Minoxidil is now used as a topical medication to stimulate hair growth in men and women. It was originally developed as a pill to treat hypertension.

    Spironolactone

    • Spironolactone is a diuretic that can be used to treat hypertension, says the American Hair Loss Association. It can also block hormones that cause hair loss, resulting in renewed growth.

    Considerations

    • Not all medications for hypertension cause hair growth. Some can have the opposite effect and contribute to hair loss.
