Black Cohosh & Hair Loss
-
Theories/Speculation
-
Black cohosh is thought to stimulate production of estrogen, a hormone that promotes normal sexual development in women. Estrogen also moderates the effects of DHT, a by-product of testosterone that can cause hair follicles to shrink and stop producing hair.
Significance
-
Menopause and other medical conditions can cause decreases in estrogen levels, possibly resulting in DHT-related hair loss. Black cohosh may help counteract these effects by boosting estrogen production.
Types
-
Black cohosh is available in tablet or tincture form.
Considerations
-
Black cohosh’s effectiveness as a hair loss treatment has not been scientifically proven.
Warning
-
Pregnant women should consult a doctor before use, as the herb is sometimes used to induce labor.
