Hair Loss Treatment From an Endocrinologist
Factors including illness, genetics and damaging hairstyles can cause hair loss. If a hormone imbalance is causing your hair loss, an endocrinologist might be able to help with treatment.-
Hair Loss
-
Your hair usually grows in the three-stage cycle: hair grows, rests, falls out and then begins the cycle again. Hair loss occurs when you shed hair and no new hair grows in its place, according to the American Academy of Family Physicians (AAFP).
Endocrinologist
-
An endocrinologist is a doctor specializing in treating problems with the glands, the organs in your body that produce hormones.
Diabetes
-
Diabetes can cause hair loss, reports the AAFP, and an endocrinologist can treat you by helping you keep your blood sugar under control. Treating the diabetes will help stop the hair loss, says The Hormone Foundation (THF).
Thyroid Problems
-
An overactive or underactive thyroid can also cause hair loss, reports the AAFP. An endocrinologist can offer treatment through hormone supplements or medication to block excessive hormones, regulating your thyroid's function and stopping hair loss.
Considerations
-
Endocrinologists do not treat hair loss directly—they treat the underlying hormonal condition trigging it. If an infection or permanent-pattern baldness is causing your hair loss, an endocrinologist will not be able to offer treatment, the AAFP says.
