Rogaine Vs. Member's Mark Brand

In 1988, Rogaine began marketing a hair-loss prevention cream made with minoxidil. This cream is available in 2 percent and 5 percent strengths. The patent on this formula expired in 1996, and other companies, including generic and store brands, were free to develop and market their own minoxidil creams using similar formulas.
  1. Rogaine

    • Rogaine is the original brand name of minoxidil, and it was developed by the pharmaceutical company McNeill-PPC. Released in 1988 as a prescription preparation for men, it later was approved for women and then, in 1996, became available over the counter. The 5 percent extra-strength version was released in 1997. A new foam-delivery method was developed in 2000.

    Member's Mark

    • Member's Mark is the store-brand product of Sam's Clubs Wholesale Stores, a division of Wal-Mart. Member's Mark produces many types of items, including pharmaceuticals such as minoxidil cream. According to the packaging, the active ingredient in the Member's Mark brand is identical to the Rogaine preparation. Member's Mark also has two strengths available, 2 percent and 5 percent, as well as formulas for women. The formulation of pharmaceuticals is closely monitored by the U.S. Food and Drug Administration to ensure quality and truth in advertising. Because of this, you are assured that Member's Mark and any other generic or store brand of minoxidil produced in the United States will be as effective as Rogaine.

    Other Available Brands

    • Most large grocery and pharmacy chains market their own store brands of many products. Some minoxidil products you might consider are Good Sense, manufactured by Perrigo and marketed through outlets such as Dollar General Stores; Walgreens brand; Equate, sold at Wal-Mart stores; and Kirkland's store brand, sold at Costco.

    Using Minoxidil

    • Minoxidil is a potent medication and should be used according to package instructions. Until you know how your skin will react, begin by using the lowest strength. Always purchase the correct formula for your gender--there are differences in the formulas. Apply the cream or foam twice daily. It might take up to a few months before you see results, so don't get discouraged.

    Considerations

    • As with any chemical, there is a chance that you might have an allergic reaction to minoxidil. If you notice any redness or excessive flaking of your scalp, discontinue use, and consult a doctor. If you are pregnant or nursing, do not use any minoxidil formula. If you do not see results after several months of use, consult your dermatologist to see if he has suggestions to remedy your hair loss.
